So last year I was working on this Quaker sampler and I knew I still had some over-one stitching to do, but back in March 2011 I thought it was perfectly reasonable to stitch in the year. After all....how long could it take?
Ahem. Evidently until March 2012.
Still, done is done. Even if I cheated a bit on the date.

I tend to avoid dating any of my work for that very reason :-)
We'll never tell. When it's 125 years old and hanging in your great, great, great granddaughter's house, what's the difference?

I'm a big believer that if the bulk of the stitching was done in the year already stitched, then there's no need to change it. I just finished off a dated 2009 Ewe & Eye piece in 2012...oh well!
A year here or there, who cares? It's done and it's beautiful! Congratulations!

I, like you, did the same thing. Back in the year 2004 I dated my Camelot Sampler by Teresa Wentzler with the finish date of 2005 trying to force myself to finish it by the end of the next year. Well here it is 2012 and the top half with the jousting scene is still unfinished. LOL That worked out well... didn't it. ;-)

I always wondered what I'd do if my name changed in the middle of stitching a big sampler piece. When it finally did change, I wasn't working on anything that it would have mattered. lol!
Just look at it as the year you started it! No one will be the wiser whether you started it or finished in that year. Done is done and that is a good thing!

Congratulations on a wonderful finish, Lee! I'm sure most of it was stitched in 2011, so I think that date is perfect... Beautiful color, too--I'll have to remember that one.
